Find the price of gold jewellery with waste and making charges, or see what you get when you sell old gold.

Hi! Let Me Help You Check the Price
I made this calculator for people who want to buy or sell gold jewellery and are not sure what a fair price is. When you walk into a shop, the jeweller says one big number. But what is inside that number? With this page, you can find out before you pay.
It is easy. You type the gold rate, the weight and the extra charges. I do the maths for you.
How to Use the Calculator (5 Easy Steps)
- Type today’s gold rate per tola. Then choose which karat that rate is for. Most news rates are for 24K.
- Choose the karat of your jewellery, like 22K or 21K. I change the rate for you.
- Type the weight in tola, masha and ratti. You can also add extra grams.
- If you are buying, type the making charges and the waste your jeweller told you. If you are selling, type the deduction.
- Press Calculate and read your answer.
What Do You Pay For When You Buy Gold Jewellery?
The price on the bill is not only gold. It has a few parts. Here they are in simple words:
| Part of the price | What it means |
|---|---|
| Gold value | The price of the gold in your piece. It is the weight times the rate. |
| Waste (wastage) | Extra gold the jeweller charges for, because some gold is lost when the piece is made. |
| Making charges | Money for the worker’s skill and time. Some people call it banwai or mazdoori. |
| Stones | Stones, pearls or beads. Their price is extra, and it is not the same as gold. |
| Tax | Some shops add tax. Ask your shop. There is a box for it in the calculator. |
Waste and making charges are two different things. Waste pays for the gold that was lost. Making charges pay for the work. Some shops put both in one number and some keep them apart, so always ask.
The Formula Behind the Price
Total price = Gold value + Waste + Making charges + Tax + Stones
Gold value is the weight times the rate for your karat. You may only know the 24K rate, so I use this to find the rate for your karat:
Rate for your karat = Rate you know × (your karat ÷ karat of that rate)
For example, if the 24K rate is PKR 300,000 per tola, then 22K is 300,000 × 22 ÷ 24 = PKR 275,000 per tola.
Tola, Masha and Ratti Made Simple
| Unit | Equals | In grams |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tola | 12 masha = 96 ratti | 11.6638 g |
| 1 masha | 8 ratti | 0.9720 g |
| 1 ratti | 1/8 masha | about 0.1215 g |
Think of it like money. A tola is like a big note. A masha is a smaller note, and a ratti is a coin. 12 mashas make 1 tola, and 8 rattis make 1 masha.
Quick Price Table for Common Weights
This table uses an example rate: 22K gold at PKR 275,000 per tola. It is not today’s rate. It shows the gold value only. Waste, making charges, stones and tax come on top.
| Weight | Gold value (example) |
|---|---|
| 1 ratti | about PKR 2,865 |
| 1 masha | about PKR 22,917 |
| 6 masha (half tola) | PKR 137,500 |
| 1 tola | PKR 275,000 |
| 1 gram | about PKR 23,577 |
| 10 grams | about PKR 235,772 |
| 2 tola | PKR 550,000 |
| 5 tola | PKR 1,375,000 |
| 10 tola | PKR 2,750,000 |
Example 1: Buying Jewellery
Let me show you with simple numbers. These are only an example, not today’s rate. You want 2 tola of 22K jewellery. The 24K rate is PKR 300,000 per tola. The making charges are PKR 10,000 per tola. The waste is 1 masha per tola.
- 22K rate: 300,000 × 22 ÷ 24 = PKR 275,000 per tola
- Gold value: 2 × 275,000 = PKR 550,000
- Waste: 2 masha is 0.1667 tola, so 0.1667 × 275,000 = PKR 45,833
- Making charges: 2 × 10,000 = PKR 20,000
- Total: about PKR 615,833
See? The gold alone was PKR 550,000, but you pay about PKR 65,833 more for waste and making.
Example 2: Selling Old Gold
Now you sell the same 2 tola of 22K gold. The buyer cuts 1 masha per tola. That is 2 masha in total. So you are paid for 2 tola minus 2 masha, which is 1.8333 tola. At PKR 275,000 per tola, you get 1.8333 × 275,000 = about PKR 504,167.
Why Is Selling Price Lower Than Buying Price?
When you buy, you pay for the gold plus waste plus making charges. When you sell, the shop mostly pays for the gold only, and often cuts some weight. You do not get the making charges back. That is why you get less money when you sell. It is normal, so check the deduction before you sell.
What the Karat Means
| Karat | Pure gold |
|---|---|
| 24K | about 99.9% |
| 22K | 91.67% |
| 21K | 87.5% |
| 18K | 75% |
A higher karat means more pure gold. 24K is the purest but it is soft, so jewellery is usually made from 22K, 21K or 18K, which are mixed with other metals to make them stronger.
6 Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Comparing only the gold rate. Two shops can have the same gold rate but very different waste and making charges.
- Not asking if waste is already inside the making charges. Some shops include it and some charge it separately.
- Forgetting the stones. Stone weight is not gold weight. Ask the shop to weigh the gold and the stones separately.
- Not checking the karat. Make sure the karat is on the bill and matches what you are paying for.
- Not watching the weighing. Stand near the scale and see the number.
- Not asking about buy-back. Ask what the shop will cut when you sell the piece later.
How to Compare Two Shops Fairly
Use my calculator for both shops and look at the line called “Effective price per tola”. It shows the real price you pay for each tola of gold after waste, making charges and tax. The shop with the lower number is the cheaper one for the same piece.
Some websites say waste is often around 5 to 10 percent. But there is no one rule. It changes from shop to shop and from design to design, so please ask and compare.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many grams are in 1 tola?
1 tola is 11.6638 grams. It is the same as 12 masha or 96 ratti.
What is waste (wastage) in gold jewellery?
Waste is the extra gold a jeweller charges for, to cover the gold lost while making the piece. It is often told in masha per tola, or in percent.
What are making charges?
Making charges are the money you pay for the work of making the piece. They can be per tola, per gram or a percent of the gold value. They change from shop to shop and design to design, so ask a few shops.
How do I find the 22K rate if I only know the 24K rate?
Multiply the 24K rate by 22 and divide by 24. This calculator does it for you when you choose the karat.
Does this calculator include tax?
Only if you type a tax percentage in the tax box. If your shop does not charge tax, leave it at 0.
Why is my jeweller’s price different from the calculator?
Jewellers may use their own rate, round the weight, or add other charges. This calculator gives you a close estimate so you know what to ask about.
Why do I get less money when I sell my gold?
The shop pays for the gold, not for the making charges, and may cut some weight. Use the “Sell Old Gold” button to see an estimate.
